Nutrition Education - WIC

WIC provides the unique benefit of access to nutrition educators. Not only will we help you provide food for your family, we will help you learn the best ways to teach your children to enjoy eating good food. Our nutrition educators are trained to listen to your individual concerns and work with you to set goals that will improve your family’s health.

There are a few types of WIC appointments, which are usually every three months and are offered either in person or over-the-phone. Learn more about them below.

Certification appointments are the first step to receiving WIC benefits. The certification process is started by our clerical team. Proof of eligibility is needed annually and can be delivered in person, by email or text.

Once the clerk has what we need, you will speak with a nutrition educator.

The nutrition team will ask questions and offer advice about:

  • Doctor’s visits and your child’s growth.
  • Your baby’s or child’s development.
  • Introducing new foods, tastes and textures.
  • Including more fruits and vegetables.
  • Healthy meal and snack patterns.
  • Any of your food-related questions.
  • Setting a personalized nutrition goal.

You can also ask about food packages and how to shop for WIC foods. The nutrition educator can provide information about other community resources that may help meet your family’s needs.

The next appointment will be a follow-up.

Follow-up appointments are quick and easy. If your appointment is WIC Smart, simply complete one lesson at www.wicsmart.com or download the WIC Smart App to your mobile device. After you complete the lesson, WIC Staff will verify it, issue more benefits and schedule your next appointment.

Other appointment options are available:

  • Over the phone
  • In person breastfeeding support group: Knox Breastfriends, hosted monthly in the WIC Kitchen on KCHD’s second floor.

During your mid-certification appointment, you will talk with a nutrition educator to discuss:

  • Your child’s growth.
  • Your progress toward personalized goals.
  • Any nutrition questions you may have.

Then, the nutrition educator will issue more food benefits and schedule your next appointment.
