WIC Approved Foods

WIC offers a variety of healthy foods that can be personalized to your individual needs. Specific foods are chosen to help provide important vitamins and minerals and support healthy growth.

A child’s WIC food package has an approximate value of $80 each month. For many women and most infants, the value is much higher. Please see the charts below for examples of WIC-eligible foods.

For women and children, depending on age and dietary needs or preferences:

  • Whole wheat breads and buns
  • Whole wheat pasta
  • Oatmeal
  • Brown rice
  • Soft corn or whole wheat tortillas
  • Bulgur

  • Wide variety of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables
  • Milk
  • Cheese
  • Yogurt
  • Lactose-free milk
  • Soy beverage
  • Tofu
  • Buttermilk
  • Evaporated milk
  • Non-fat dry powdered milk
  • Eggs
  • Beans (dry and canned)
  • Peanut butter

For fully breastfeeding women:

  • Canned fish (tuna, salmon, sardines and jack mackerel)

 

For infants, complementary foods begin at age 6 months; amounts provided depend on breastfeeding status and caregiver choice:

  • Fully breastfeeding infants: 2 – 8oz boxes of infant cereal
  • Mostly breastfed and fully formula fed infants: 1 – 8oz boxes of infant cereal
  • 32 - 4oz containers (or 16 twin packs) infant fruits & vegetables
  • Or 16 - 4oz containers (or 8 twin packs) infant fruits & vegetables AND $10 infant CVB
  • Or 0 oz infant fruits & vegetables AND $20 infant CVB
  • Breastmilk or formula
  • Fully breastfeeding infants: 16 – 2.5oz jars of baby food meats

*CVB = Cash Value Benefit for fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables. Dried fruits and vegetables are not allowed with infant CVB.

Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program

Each July and August, participating women and children can receive additional money to purchase locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs from farmers’ markets. Learn more here: Knox County, Tennessee FMNP.
