FAQ's

To qualify for WIC, individuals must be eligible by category and by income:

Category:

  • Pregnant
  • Postpartum up to six months
  • Postpartum up to 12 months if breastfeeding
  • Infants and children up to age five

Any caregivers who have children under age five who are income eligible:

  • Fathers
  • Grandparents
  • Foster parents
  • Stepparents
  • Legal guardians

Income:

WIC income guidelines are higher than most people think. Check the income guidelines for your family to see if you qualify.

If you are enrolled in TennCare, Families First (TANF), or if anyone in your household receives SNAP benefits, you automatically qualify for WIC.

You can also use the WIC Prescreening Tool to see if you are eligible.

WIC offers many benefits to families who qualify for services:

  • Please include your phone number, and we’ll call you the same or next business day.

WIC appointment phone numbers:

  • For hearing impaired (TDD), call 865-215-5001.

Complete one lesson within 30 days of your WIC Smart appointment through the WIC Smart App.

To shop with your WIC Card, you need to:

  1. Activate your card by calling the number on the back, following the prompts, and setting your 4-digit PIN before you use it for the first time.
  2. Check your balance of available WIC foods by selecting the “My Benefits” icon in the WIC Shopper App or calling the toll-free number on the back of your card.
  3. Shop for your WIC foods at authorized stores. The WIC Shopper app includes a list of authorized stores and a “Scan Barcode” feature that will show you if the specific food item is available in your benefits.
  4. Check out at the grocery store with your WIC card. Swipe your card, enter your PIN, and sign the receipt. Swipe the WIC card before your SNAP card or any other payment option.
  5. For additional assistance, call or text “WIC Lady SOS” to 865-679-2941 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

On the first Wednesday of every month, all KCHD offices and clinics are closed in the morning for staff in-service. On these days, the main location (140 Dameron Ave.) will open at 11 a.m. and the West Clinic (1028 Old Cedar Bluff) will open at 11:30 a.m.

Clinics will also open at 10:30 a.m. (Main location) and 11 a.m. (West Clinic) on the following Wednesdays: April 17 and July 17. All other offices will open at 8 a.m.
