Julie Gautreau was appointed to the Election Commission after her retirement from the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, where she served Knox County as a criminal defense trial lawyer. For ten years of her legal career, she was a trial practice instructor at the University of Tennessee College of Law, Center for Advocacy and Dispute Resolution.

Through her work with accused and incarcerated clients, she became interested in the collateral effects of criminal convictions, such as felon disenfranchisement. She has published editorial columns and spoken on incarcerated rights and immigrant rights in various civic forums. She has volunteered service on behalf of undocumented immigrants in conflict with ICE. She was a presenter on the subject of voting rights at the East Tennessee History Center for the 2019 symposium, Democracy and the Informed Citizen.
