Starlifter will perform at the New Harvest Park Amphitheater
On their “Rockin’ Through Tennessee” tour, Starlifter, the variety show group of the United States Air Force Band of Mid America, will perform at the New Harvest Park amphitheater on Sunday, May 20 at 4 p.m. The concert is for all audiences and is presented free of charge by Knox County Parks and Recreation.
“We are glad Starlifter chose one of our parks for a stop on their Tennessee tour and I’m pleased we can provide this type of quality entertainment for our citizens,” said Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett.
Starlifter, from Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, is made up of seven musicians who present a fast-paced, high energy performance of rock and roll, pop, country, rhythm and blues, and patriotic crowd pleasers. In each genre, their repertoire extends from oldies to songs at the top of today’s charts.
New Harvest Park is located in northeast Knox County, just off Washington Pike past the Target shopping center. The amphitheater is surrounded by grass and visitors may bring blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy the show.

Knox County's New Harvest Park Farmers Market Opening Thursday, April 12
Knox County’s New Harvest Park Farmers Market will open for the season on Thursday, April 12 at 3 p.m. at the park located at 4775 New Harvest Lane in northeast Knox County.
Though early in the season, several vendors with spring produce including strawberries, tomatoes, asparagus, lettuce and a variety of greens are expected, along with perennial favorites selling freshly baked goods, homemade salsa, fresh meats, local dairy products and ice cream, natural soaps, candles and bedding plants.
"The New Harvest Park farmers market is a great place to get fresh and local fruits and vegetables in an area of the county not served by other markets. With the playground and splashpad, New Harvest Park is a natural gathering place, and adding the opportunity to purchase healthy foods at the market is a benefit to that community and the local economy," said Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett.
In addition to the market vendors, Pellissippi State Culinary Institute in conjunction with UT will be cooking up some fresh new recipes for folks to try at 3:30. The chefs will use produce available from the vendors. At 4:30, Neal Denton and David Vandergriff from Knox County/UT Agricultural Extension will present a gardening workshop.
The New Harvest Park Farmers Market accepts SNAP benefit cards. The market is open every Thursday, from 3 until 6 p.m. through November.
Information on becoming a vendor at the market may be found on this website by following the link on the left.
New Playground Open at Carl Cowan Park
Just in time for this beautiful spring weather, the new playground is open and ready for action at Carl Cowan Park! The park is located at 10050 S. Northshore Drive in west Knox County.
NEW PLAYGROUND FOR CARL COWAN
A new playground will soon be built at Carl Cowan Park in west Knox County. The playground will replace several old pieces of equipment that date back to the 1980s.
"The playground at Carl Cowan was the oldest in our system," said Doug Bataille, Senior Director. "With the number of visitors the park gets, especially during the summer months when the splashpad is open, an upgrade was needed for safety reasons."
The new, accessible playground is designed for children up to 12 years old and features two slides, a climbing wall and climbing web, agility stations and several individual activity panels. It will be set on a solid rubber surface...more>>
Walk for your Health!
If your New Year's resolution is to improve your health, find a park or greenway and get walking! According to the Mayo Clinic, walking is a great low-impact exercise with numerous benefits including trimming your waistline and improving your physical fitness. Increased levels of fitness may also significantly boost mental and physical health and can prevent certain diseases. Walking can also help you lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol, raise your HDL (good) cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, and reduce your risk of or help manage type 2 diabetes.
All it takes to reap these benefits is a routine of brisk walking for just 30 minutes a day. It doesn't get much simpler than that. And with parks and greenways in all areas of the county, you will find safe, inexpensive avenues for regular exercise. To find a greenway or park near you, click on the Find a Park tab on the left. Then, get out and take a walk!
