Maintain, Don't Gain

News Image

Most Americans gain an average of about one to two pounds between Thanksgiving and New Years Day every year. Though these may not sound like big numbers, the problem is that most people do not lose this weight after the holiday season. Over the years, this weight adds up and can become problematic. Here are some tips to help you avoid those holiday gains:

  • Skip the cookies - bring healthy items to your holiday work parties.
  • Make family traditions more about activities rather than food – play a game of family football if the weather allows or go on a walk.
  • Offer healthy items at the table like fruits and vegetables – these fiber-rich foods will help keep you full.
  • Remember that healthy items have calories too. Simply adding healthy foods to your plate will not help make your plate healthy – substitution is key.
  • Use smaller plates – research shows this trick helps you put less on your plate and allows you to stay true to portion sizes.
  • Watch the portions and avoid going back for a second or third plate.
  • Eat slowly and savor the flavor – waiting for a few minutes after you finish your plate can help make you realize that you are full.
  • Don’t skip meals during the day - this can lead to overeating later on.
  • Watch the drinks – alcoholic beverages can have as many calories as a meal, especially mixed drinks since they contain a lot of added sugar.
