Knox County Health Department offers additional food-safety course for restaurant workers

Beginning in June, the Knox County Health Department’s (KCHD) Environmental Health division will offer an additional food-safety training course for restaurant owners, managers and staff. All restaurant workers are encouraged to attend to better understand food-safety precautions and how the new food code will apply to their restaurant.

The new course will take place the first Thursday of every month, beginning June 5, 2014, at 8:30 a.m. in the auditorium at KCHD, 140 Dameron Ave. This course is offered in addition to the current food-safety training class, which takes place the third Thursday of every month at 1 p.m. also in the KCHD auditorium. Both morning and afternoon courses are free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Spanish instruction is available upon request. For more information, please contact KCHD’s Environmental Health division at 865-215-5200 or health@knoxcounty.org.

Governor Haslam proposed legislation in the 2013 session updating Tennessee's food laws to match the 2009 FDA Model Food Code. The legislation passed both the House and Senate unanimously and was signed by the Governor in March of 2013. The provisions of the law will be enacted on July 1, 2015.

KCHD’s Environmental Health division helps prevent and reduce potential public health threats, such as outbreaks, by enforcing regulations of permitted facilities and educating the community about good health practices. The division is charged with permitting and regulatory inspection of more than 3,400 facilities, including restaurants, school cafeterias, grocery stores, produce markets, swimming pools, campgrounds, and tattoo and body piercing establishments
