Assistant District Attorney General
Applicants must be active members in good standing or in the process of applying for such status with the Tennessee Bar. All employment is contingent on admission to the Tennessee Bar. Candidates from all experience levels are welcome to apply. Knowledge of the local bar system, criminal procedure, and the rules of evidence are appreciated. Job duties include written and oral advocacy, trial management, interviewing witnesses, and working closely and professionally with the judicial branch, law enforcement agencies, and defense bar of Knox County. Assistant District Attorneys General are assigned to various positions within the criminal justice system in Knox County, reaching all facets of Juvenile Court, General Sessions Court, the Grand Jury, and Criminal Courts.
Although candidates are judged individually, our Hiring Committee considers the following indicators to determine which applicants to interview and hire:
- Academic Achievement - Top 50% of class
- Writing Skills - Law Review or Other Publications
- Law School Activities - Mock Trial Competition, Moot Court, etc.
- Course Selections - Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Evidence, Trial Advocacy, Advanced Trial Advocacy, Appellate Advocacy, Clinical Courses, Public Interest Law, etc.
- Prior Leadership Experience and/or Community Involvement
- Demonstrated commitment to public service and/or criminal law
- Highest standards of professional and personal integrity and judgment
Prior service in the law enforcement field is preferred. Knox County District Attorney General Investigators are sworn peace officers with law enforcement duties, performing a wide range of services for the Office.
Administrative & Support Staff
Whether an Executive Assistant, Information Technology Specialist, Human Resources Specialist, Community Affairs Coordinator, Truancy Coordinator, Legal Secretary, Receptionist, Victim/Witness Coordinator, or Assistant Victim/Witness Coordinator, the Knox County District Attorney General Administrative and Support Staff perform key functions throughout the Office. For Victim/Witness Coordinator or Assistant Victim/Witness Coordinator positions, degrees in the Criminal Justice or Paralegal fields are preferred.

The Knox County District Attorney General Internship Program provides courtroom training and experience for current law students working with Assistant District Attorneys and Support Staff. Most Interns receive academic credit from their respective institutions. Qualified Interns are licensed via the Tennessee Supreme Court, and work their own cases under the supervision of an Assistant District Attorney General.
