One of the primary responsibilities of the Knox County Criminal Court Clerk includes the collection of restitution payments.  The term "restitution" in the criminal justice system means payment by an offender to the victim for the harm caused by the offender's wrongful acts. Courts have the authority to order convicted offenders to pay restitution to victims as part of their sentences. In calendar year 2016, the Criminal and Criminal Sessions Court Clerk’s office collected $838,708, all of which has been directly distributed to victims who have experienced a financial impact resulting from a crime.
