Life Insurance Information

Employee Basic Life Insurance

If you are full-time employee (regularly scheduled to work 18.5 hours or more per week) and are currently in an active status, upon your enrollment and at the time of hire, Knox County purchases Basic Life Insurance coverage for you in the amount of 1-½ times your current annual salary rounded to the nearest multiple of $1,000. The maximum coverage is $50,000.

Employee Supplemental Life Insurance

Employees may purchase Supplemental Life Insurance on themselves, which is over and above the Basic Life Insurance provided by Knox County. Coverage amounts range from $20,000 to $105,000. Cost id dependent upon amount of coverage and age of employee.

Employees who elect to purchase Supplemental Life Insurance coverage must do so within 30 days of becoming eligible for coverage, or within 30 days of a qualifying event (marriage, divorce, etc.). Coverage requested after the 30-day window will be subject to approval from MetLife after completing the evidence of insurability.

Employee AD&D (Accidental Death & Dismemberment)

Knox County provides Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage through MetLife at no cost to you. AD&D provides coverage as a result of death or dismemberment due to an accident in addition to the basic life insurance provided by Knox County.

This AD&D benefit will provide 2 times the basic coverage amount up to a maximum benefit of $100,000. If your death is due to an on the job accident, an additional benefit may be paid up to the plan maximum of $100,000.

Spouse / Child Supplemental Life Insurance

Employees may elect to purchase $10,000 of Life Insurance on their spouse at the cost of $2.84 per month. Employees who elect to purchase Supplemental Life coverage must do so within 30 days of becoming eligible for coverage, or within 30 days of a qualifying event (marriage, divorce, etc.). Coverage requested after the 30-day window will be subject to approval from MetLife after completing the evidence of insurability.

Employees may elect to purchase $5,000 of Life Insurance on all of their dependent children (age 14 days till age 19, or age 24 if a full-time student) at the cost of $.90 per month regardless of the number of children covered.

Benefits are paid exclusively by MetLife Life Insurance Company
in accordance with the terms of its policy.
