EPA Official to Speak at Knox County Helath Department
Focus is Environmental Hazards on Older Adults

are sponsoring an informative seminar by Kathy Sykes, senior advisor for the EPA Aging Initiative Office on Thursday, May 14, 1 p.m., in the KCHD auditorium at 140 Dameron Avenue. The seminar is free and open to the public. The presentation is titled “Environmental Hazards and How They Affect Older Adults” and includes discussion on the following information:

  • The U.S. is undergoing a demographic transformation. By 2030, the number of older persons aged 65 and older is expected to double to 70 million, one out of every five Americans.

  • As we age, our bodies may become more susceptible to environmental hazards because of the diminished capacity of various organ systems that occur in the natural aging process. For example, our bodies are less able to detoxify and eliminate toxins.

  • In addition, as we age, we are exposed to a lifetime of environmental contaminants capable of persisting and accumulating in our bodies.

  • Common environmental hazards that may especially harm the health of older persons include lead, mercury, ozone, particulates, pesticides, temperature extremes, and water contaminants.

You are invited to cover this timely presentation. Ms. Sykes and KCHD environmental specialists will be available for interviews.
