Emergency Preparedness for a Vulnerable Population

Knox County Health Department will present a timely and practical planning session specifically for homeless service providers to facilitate emergency preparedness and pandemic planning on Wednesday, April 29, 8:30-10:30 a.m. at 140 Dameron Avenue, in the auditorium. The seminar, which is targeted to agencies with daily interaction with the homeless population, also will provide an emergency preparedness guide which can be quickly adapted for use by most organizations. Agencies from across Knox County and surrounding areas will be attending.
The training stresses increased awareness and preparation in the event a pandemic outbreak occurs. During a public health emergency, officials estimate that agencies could face the following scenarios:

  • Up to 40 percent of your workers and volunteers won’t come in.
  • Hospitals and the jails will discharge more and admit fewer.
  • Closed schools and labor pools will increase your burden.
  • Your clients and you will be more at risk than other groups.

You are invited to cover this important training, which will serve as a pilot program for agencies across the state. Keith Richardson from the Office of Housing and Urban Development will be available for interviews. Contact Ranee Randby for more information.
