Knox County Department of Engineering and Public Works announces two road closings beginning on July 14th at 7:00 a.m.
The Washington Pike closure is required due to grade changes of the road. The bridge has been rated “poor” by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) for more than 10 years due to approach alignment and structural deficiencies, both of which will be addressed and corrected as part of the closure. The contractor, Southern Constructors Incorporated of Knoxville, has 90 days to complete the work taking the project through October 9, 2010 at a cost of $537,043.10.
The Dry Gap Pike closure is required due to grade changes to all roads and intersections being “moved” to a more suitable location. Knox County identified this location as an area of need several years ago and generated a large scale improvement plan. The project will focus on the worst part of the larger project and address those deficiencies with the current financial resources we have in place. The contractor, Rogers Group, Inc., of Oak Ridge has 300 days to complete the work taking the project through May 7, 2010 at a cost of $931,551.41.
Washington Pike will be closed for approximately two to three months while Dry Gap Pike will be closed for approximately six to eight months. Due to the nature of each of the projects and safety reasons, traffic cannot be maintained.
