Knox County Fire Prevention Bureau Wal-Mart Grant Recipient

New HiresThe Knox County Fire Prevention Bureau is glad to announce that it has received a $1,000.00 grant from Wal-Mart Store #2932 located in the Turkey Creek Shopping Center in west Knox County.  This grant is in support of the Bureau’s smoke alarm program for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The funds received will go toward the purchase of specialized smoke/strobe alarms that will be distributed and installed free of charge to Knox County residents who have hearing loss that would prevent them from hearing a traditional smoke alarm.  The Knoxville Center for the Deaf has identified at least 10,000 individuals in Knox County that have hearing loss to a degree that they would be at a very high risk in the event of a fire in their home.

The specialized smoke alarms to be purchased will have a louder than normal audio alarm as well as a bright flashing strobe light that is effective in alerting deaf and hard of hearing individuals even while asleep.  This technology is however quiet expensive and many individuals and families cannot afford to buy one on their budgets.  Through this gift however, we will be able to provide and install them completely free of charge to those in need.
