Thomas "Tank" Strickland was elected to the Knox County Commission in 2002 to serve the people of the First District, succeeding veteran Commissioner Frank W. Bowden, Jr. who retired.

Commissioner Strickland has long been a community activist, having deep roots in East Knoxville and the First Commission District.  Commissioner Strickland has devoted many years of his life to bettering Knoxville and our community. 

In September of 2004, Commissioner Strickland was elected by his colleagues to serve as Vice Chairman of the full Knox County Commission. Commissioner Strickland currently serves as Chariman of the Commission.

Commissioner Strickland is a former member of the Knox County Election Commission, having been appointed to serve by the members of the Knox County legislative delegation.

Commissioner Strickland is a graduate of Austin East High School and the University of Tennessee. He is the past President of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, was a founding member of the University of Tennessee Black Alumni Association, and is the Vice Chairman of CAC, and a member of the Tennessee Theatre Board.

Commissioner Strickland serves as the Community Relations Director and Special Assistant to the Mayor for the City of Knoxville in the administration of Mayor Bill Haslam.

Commissioner Strickland is married to the former Terry Locke.  The Stricklands have three children: Jacquai, Ashley, and Sheldon, and reside at Gardenia Avenue.
