Commissioner Harmon is serving his first term as a member of the Knox County Commission, having been elected in 2002 without opposition in either the primary or general elections.
Commissioner Harmon was first elected to public office in 1985, seeking a seat to the Knoxville Board of Education. Ivan Harmon served for approximately eighteen months before voters choose to close the City of Knoxville school system. Commissioner Harmon was elected to the Knoxville City Council in 1989, defeating incumbent Councilman Charlie Gault. Harmon was reelected in 1993 and 1997. In fact, Ivan Harmon was the first Councilman from the Third District ever to be reelected by the people. Wishing to continue to serve the public, Harmon became a candidate for the Knox County Commission in 2002, succeeding Commissioner Pat Medley who retired.
Commissioner Harmon serves on the Finance Committee, Board of Zoning Appeals and the Knox County Beer Board.
Commissioner Harmon is a long-time member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church and is the President of the Christian Business Network, and a member of the Norwood Kiwanis Club.
Ivan and his wife, Jane, have three children: Amy Harmon Cummings, Scott, and Steven.
