
The purpose of this series is to inform interested stakeholders about building healthier communities as a means of fostering development practices that will benefit economic, community and environmental health. This series will function as a resource for responsible growth in Knox County and the entire East Tennessee region. Building Healthy Communities will bring recommendations of zoning, codes, ordinances and policy to local elected officials.
Obesity, Health and the Built Environment

Knox County will present another workshop in the Building Healthy Communities series on March 29. Obesity, Health and the Built Environment, presented by Dr. Lawrence Frank,will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Knox County Health Department, 140 Dameron Avenue, Knoxville, Tennessee. The event is free, and registration is not required.
Dr. Frank, a leading authority on community design and public health, will discuss how the design of our community can shape our bodies and ultimately impact our region's health.
With a J. Armand Bombardier Chair in Sustainable Transportation Systems at the Centre for Human Settlements, School of Community and Regional Planning and the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Dr. Lawrence is one of the nation's foremost experts on the relationship of the built environment on health.
The workshop, targeted to neighborhood, government, business and development sectors, is the fourth in the Building Healthy Communities series, which is aimed at fostering development practices that will benefit the economic, community and environmental health of our region. Other workshops have included: The Economics of Low Impact Development, Walkability, and Low Impact Development and Stormwater. Building Healthy Communities is part of a process to build advocacy for local zoning, codes, ordinances and development policies.
Dr. Frank is offering the Obesity, Health and the Built Environment lecture in conjunction with his participation the next day in a panel discussion on Community, Environment, and Health at Plain Talk on Quality Growth An East Tennessee Conference at the Knoxville Convention Center.
